Sliding seamlessly into the Executive Editor role is award-winning industry veteran Rob McManamy, who most recently served as founding editor of BuiltWorlds Media LLC, a Chicago-based blog and events company focused on ‘smart’ innovation and inter-disciplinary collaboration in the built space. Of note, BuiltWorlds works particularly closely with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America.
Previously, Rob had cut his professional teeth in the design and construction industry via 15 years with McGraw-Hill Construction. That work included eight years as Midwest Bureau Chief for Engineering News-Record (ENR) and four years as editor-in-chief of Design-Build magazine. Subsequent work at Building Design + Construction and Public Works magazines rounds out his rich editorial background, which also saw him write for the Construction Safety Council, the University of Chicago News Office, and the Character Education Partnership. Editorial awards include Rob’s reporting and editing as part of team coverage focused on construction-related issues stemming from the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon in 2001. Of additional note to subcontractors, while at ENR some 25+ years ago, Rob was the first editor and initial developer of the magazine’s annual ‘Top 600 Specialty Contractors’ issue, which still compiles annual lists of the leading U.S. firms in the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, and other trades.
Born in New York City, but based in Chicago since 1990, Rob is married with two children in college. He holds an undergraduate degree in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, and a law degree with a concentration in dispute resolution from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
